     Pigment Monoprints on Painted Metal

Pigment prints on painted metal are unique prints.  Each one is different due to the way in which the paint is applied, the type of metal, the patinas used on the metal, etc.  As such, they are priced individually and are not part of an edition.  In this respect, they are more like paintings than they are like paper prints and they are priced accordingly.  They are coated with multiple coats of UV protective Varnish and come ready to hang without additional framing.  Sizes range from 11” x 14” up to 44” x 96” or larger for multiple panel pieces.  Prices for finished Pigment Monoprints range from $400 to $8000 and they are priced by individual piece.  They are made to custom order or can be viewed and ordered from my website.  If you see a pigment monoprint you want that has already sold I can custom print another on the same material but it will not be exactly identical as no two are the same.  Monoprints are priced individually as shown on my website, or by quote for custom orders

Pigment Relief Monoprints on Painted Metal

Relief Monoprints are my most recent type of prints and are an extension of my pigment prints on paint.  They are first printed on hand applied, painted thin metal and metal foil, copper, aluminum and stainless steel.  An outline of the image is then printed on a backing plate and a raised, bas-relief image is created on the backing plate. The printed metal image is then formed  and pressed into the relief image, resulting in a three dimensional, bas-relief combination of photography, painting and sculpture.  These works are truly one of a kind, each one unique, require a tremendous amount of work, time and materials to create, and they are priced individually.

Framing, Mounting, Matting, UV Coating, Etc

I work directly with several local, very high quality frame shops in Tucson, AZ and can provide all manner of custom framing, but in most cases my suggestion is that the client work directly with the frame shop of your choice, or I can put you in contact with mine.  I am more than willing to suggest how I would frame a piece of mine, and can even have it done for you at cost plus a small surcharge for my time.  I find most clients are very particular about how they want the framing done, and my preference is not to get involved in that.  Mounting, UV protective varnish, and finishing of my monoprints is another story, the finishing is part of the process in many cases and so becomes part of the final price.  Information on that is below.  One thing I should note, none of these processes/options listed below are remotely comparable to the common sort of prints on aluminum or canvas prints now available all over the web at extremely low prices reflective of their quality.  My pieces are all either archival paper prints hand mounted on aluminum or copper sheets, or else printed directly on a hand painted white gesso surface of acrylic paint on metal sheets.  The prints on paint are a unique process I pioneered and are available nowhere else, as are the newest relief prints on paint.

Mounted with UV Protective Varnish Coating

Multiple UV Archival Varnish coating is my preferred alternative to traditional matting and framing, primarily because it gets the print out from behind glass or plexiglass and eliminates that barrier to the physical presence of the print.  It also eliminates the problem of reflection, which can be quite distracting particularly with large prints in spaces with a lot of windows.  A UV Varnish coating is not indestructible, it can be scratched with a sharp object like a screwdriver, but so can the paint on a Rembrandt, and in most respects it is as durable as oil or acrylic paintings and as archival as the pigments and the paper or the paint and metals in my prints on paint.  I use the highest quality rag papers and pigment inksets available, and the average life expectancy is well in excess of 100-150 years.  Prints to be varnished are first mounted on dibond aluminum in the case of flush mounting or on aluminum and copper sheets where there is a border around the image area.  Metal Patinas are also an option on the borders. Hanging hardware is then attached to the back of the piece, and these come ready to hang, or they can be framed in a traditional shadow box frame the way a painting would be framed.  Pricing varies depending on the metal backing, borders, patinas, etc but a rough rule of thumb would be to add between 15% and 25% to the price of the print by itself for mounted and varnished prints ready to hang without a frame.  So for instance, a print that retails for $1000 would run between $150-$250 for mounting, varnishing, and hanging hardware.

Monoprints on Paint, Relief Prints on Paint

There is really no rule of thumb for pricing on my prints on paint or relief print because of the unique nature of each piece.  For this reason, I do not have a price list by size for these pieces.  I list finished pieces that I have in my studio that are for sale and have photographs of the pieces available, including close-up detail shots of the surface and of the patinas used.  I can quote prices for custom pieces for most images, but since each piece is unique there is a certain amount of variability involved, and it is best to discuss this directly with me.  There are many options for finishing of these pieces, and that needs to be discussed individually as well.  The paints I use for my painted pieces are designed specifically for printing with high end large format pigment printers and their archival qualities and resistance to fading equal or exceed those of any paper prints.
